Hi William, thank you for reaching out. I'm having a hard time recalling your specific experience here, I know its been 4 years since our last Weightlifting Seminar, but I do know that the host requested that there be no interruptions as we honored his request. I'm not sure if you are using an alias, but I dont seem to find your name as a member here and are curious to the review after all this time. Our current state at Capital finds a large contingent of LEOs, Military, First Responders, Teachers, Students, all apart of our Hometown Hero's program which is inclusive of all races, ethnicities and our LGBTQ community. We do appreciate the kind words and I more than welcome you to contact me any time if you'd like to further discuss at
[email protected], we welcome everyone in our all-inclusive community here at Capital.

I was a member of this gym for awhile. It was okay at best. The Crossfit area was small. The coaching wildly inconsistent. A couple were decent crossfitters, a couple apparently came from different backgrounds. But, I never really felt welcomed at the gym (Im LE.) There would be group events that were never mentioned, ya know, high school stuff, but message received. No big deal, as thats become the new norm in a bunch of affiliates, so I mostly used the open gym hours (which even I have to admit were EXTREMELY GENEROUS compared to most affiliates!!! If you are a solo athlete, just looking for equipment not classes / community check it out.) The communication was never great. One Saturday I showed up to workout by myself. Apparently, there had been a last minute opportunity to host a weight lifting seminar, so the Crossfit area was closed. I asked the manager, Don, if he could grab a kettlebell for me when the class on break, set it out the backdoor (in the cargo loading alleyway), and I would put something something together for myself outside of the facility. Thisapparently unreasonablerequest was met with, No, I cant do that. Roger that, sir. Shortly after that impressive display of customer service, I moved on. Dont misunderstand, I did meet some terrific and kind people there. This review is of the business (in Alexandria), the management and the general atmosphere (at least as it was for me.) If you are LE, there are far more welcoming gyms in the NOVA area. In this case, it would be worth a few extra minutes in the car.

I'm sorry to read that you felt thrown to the wolves. When I created Capital, my every intention was to provide a friendly, fun and safe experience, for learning and training in proven martial arts and elite fitness programs. With rare exception, our brown and black belt Jiu-Jitsu coaches have over a decade of experience, and I hear from students all the time about their attention to detail and positive demeanors. The spider guard was covered in the first weeks of March 2019. While it wasn't noted in the review, I think that maybe you are attending the day classes, which are shorter -- due to the fact that most people attending are on their lunch breaks -- and therefore abbreviated. Also, our 15 class rule on sparring is a guideline. But even after 15 classes, nobody is made to spar. Feel free to attend any of my Wednesday or Thursday 7PM classes and speak to me (Jeremy) in person. Maybe I can get a better sense of what went wrong with your initial experiences at Capital.

I could say a lot. The black belts are cool. But some of the coaches aren't really teachers. They go over the lesson for the day and throw you to the wolves. Students learn things like arm bars, triangle chokes, rear naked chokes. But then when you roll, you haven't learned anything about setting up a submission. Defending the mount. Defending knee on belly. transitioning from one move to the next. You will spend the first 6-9 months LOST. The most you might learn to do is survive but thats it. I asked an instructor about why we do a technique a certain way and not the other way and he said in a smug way "Master Royce tells us to do it this way and thats the way you do it." If Gracie jiu jitsu is supposed to be a constantly evolving art then certainly the answer to a question about a certain technique shouldn't be "Just do it." And lets not talk about promotions. Certain instructors have said out of their mouths that they don't make it a point to give out stripes. They say you are not allowed to spar after the first 15 classes. Well that is a bold face lie because I was being choked out and arm barred by a high level belt during my 3rd class. But if you want to know what the bar is to measure your progress you better watch a LOT of Youtube videos. No one will teach you things like for example, what a spider guard is. The color belts will catch you in it in sparring. And you just have to figure it out. Schools are for places of learning. But I have learned more watching YouTube. I'm currently looking for another school. While it might be good for some or most it isn't good for me. Nice people. But a lot of the teachers are self absorbed and disconnected from the process of passing on knowledge to their students. And for the schools to be ran by school teachers, the saying "There are no bad students just bad teachers" seems to only apply to academics. But hey.....you got your brown belt so who cares what your white belts know or dont know right?
