So, my husband (no doubt in desperate straits trying to figure out a good gift for me) bought me a weekend course "Make your own leather Apron" I honestly was a bit iffy, why not just buy me a fancy one instead? I thought, but I was so very wrong!!! It was super fun, Amanda the teacher was really fabulous and so helpful and also really fun. She had a lot of skill and knowledge was nothing was held back. we all made our Aprons, learnt some basic leatherworking skills which was really fun and satisfying, then got to personalise things like pockets, hanging rings etc. I use mine for glasswork so I could set it up how I liked with a perfect fit and it has made me wonder why I ever used the $20 el-bodgo job that I set fire to once - so I am pretty sure that old thing wasn't real leather. The Apron making course was over a weekend, we took our lunch and had a break when and if we needed one. By Sunday arvo a few of us had finished and we got to scramble around in the scrap boxes and make a few fun sculptural keyrings. I went home, and then called back the following weekend to buy leather to play with at home. It was really fantastic!!!
Thoroughly enjoyable course, the two knives I made will be cherished by my children and I got a great sense of satisfaction making two great knives with my own hand. Baz was brilliant!
Visited the forge this afternoon to get a small axe sharpened. Done quickly while I waited, the cost was a very reasonable $10, and the axe was sharp enough to shave with ! A great job !
Completed a Japanese knife making course at Tharwa Valley Forge after being gifted it as a present. I had a marvellous time. The trainer was amazing in her instruction, attention to detail, abilities and setting a fun and well paced course. I think the course is what you make of it, literally, but the knives I left with are awesome and I would have some confidence to take on making a forged knife with limited input having completed the course. That said there is still a lot to learn The owner is a champion and the facilities are perfect and the setting is great Would do it again and would recommend to a friend
