I went to Medac the day after I was on an uninhabited island and stepped into an oyster bed, I have 17 cuts, on both feet and and a few on my hand, there are about five very deep cuts that bled profusely. I didn't go straight to the medical clinic, as it took me hours to get back to land the day before, but washed out with hydrogen peroxide that I got at a store on the 2 hr drive home. The next day I then went to Long Leaf Medac in Wilmington to be looked at, and the Dr said he would have stitched an area but being so much time had went by he was worried and wanted to keep it open for the possibility an infection had spread. He had to look at several cuts & soaked, bandaged & wrapped both feet, and wanted me to use crutches as I had no where on my feet to walk. I declined the crutches because I probably would have fallen again trying to use them. He prescribed Doxycycline 100 mgs, 5 day supply. I also had not looked it up yet either that 5 days is not enough. I took my last one today and looked online and nowhere online has anyone that I saw ever been prescribed such a small supply. I paid for it, it is not like they were giving them to me. Even with someone with the lowest risk of an infection, takes at least a 2 week supply! I am worried that if the infection is not gone that it will come back with a vengeance and could turn into a super infection. I called them back today to see if they would prescribe me more and they said NO, that I would have to pay AGAIN to be re evaluated. I asked why they gave me less than half of a prescription when he was worried an infection may have entered my body due to the amount of time until I got there! The nurse that called me back was curt and rude and said she couldn't answer my question as to why the Dr gave me only 5 days. I called on Friday May 31st and spoke to her a little after 7pm. I was hoping she would say that 5 days was all I needed, but said she couldn't answer why he only gave me a 5 day supply. I told her I wanted answers as I had taken my last pill this morning, and she said "I'm going to hang up now!" and she hung up when I was in mid sentence! I feel I am in danger as some of the cuts are still bad. All I wanted was for them to call in at least a 10 day supply to my pharmacy so I would be safe. Did they give me a small dose so that I have to come back in?? Also not only that, the day I came there they gave me back another person's insurance card and gave THAT person MY insurance card! I left and didn't realize it until I went to pic up my 5 day prescription at CVS and they told me that wasn't my card. I had to call Medac for them to give the pharmacist my insurance numbers and got my 5 day prescription , and even in the pain I was in, I went back to Medac to return the other person's card. But the other person that had my card lived in a different county and Medac said I could come back tomorrow to get my card. I told them that I am supposed to stay off my feet and if they would mail it to me. Its been 6 days and no one seems to know where my card is! When I called earlier today to leave a message with a receptionist, I gave her my phone number... SLOWLY and clearly...glad she read it back to me because she had the numbers backwards. Hey, we all make mistakes but all this wrapped into one experience , and not her, but the RN on duty was so abrupt and rude over the phone. The one that gave the wrong card back was very apologetic. It's not that I didn't get my way and get the amount of antibiotics that I need, but the way she talked to me from the beginning of the call and rushing me off when I am so concerned. You should see my feet and hand! I think I would have been better off not taking any antibiotics than 5 days worth because my body can become resistant to the antibiotic if it turns into a super infection. Everything I pull up about Doxycycline is a 2 wk to a month supply & some were for very small issues that people had. I had one of the worst possible types of bacteria possibilities. Look up Oyster bed infection.
