If you want your content to appear in Google search results, the first step is clear: get Google to index your website. But what does that really mean in 2025? During the recent Search Central APAC event, Google clarified exactly which signals influence the indexing process — and which don't.

What Signals Help Google to Index Your Website?

Google emphasized that indexing and ranking are two different steps. Your content can’t rank if it isn’t indexed. So, how do you help Google crawler find and index your pages?

    • Country and Language: Google needs to understand the geographical targeting and language of your content.
    • XML Sitemap: A sitemap is a list of important URLs on your website. It tells Google which pages on your website you want to be crawled and indexed.
    • HTTPS / Secure Site: A secure site (HTTPS) is a prerequisite for indexing.
    • Crawlability: If Googlebot can’t crawl your site, it can’t index your content. Proper robots.txt settings and server responses are essential.
    • Dofollow Links: Google can find new pages through links. Avoid "nofollow" attributes if you want a page to be discovered.
    • Freshness: New or updated pages often trigger crawling your website again.
    • Core Web Vitals: These quality metrics help Google decide whether a page on your site is worth crawling and indexing.
    • No Spam Policy Violations: If your site violates Google's spam policies, it may be excluded from the Google index.

What Doesn’t Help Google to Index Your Site?

This is where many SEO myths fall apart. Some signals help ranking, but not indexing. Here's what Google confirmed doesn’t directly impact whether a page is indexed:

    • Domain Age & History: These are not signals for getting your website indexed.
    • Structured Data (Schema.org): While it helps generate rich snippets in search results, it won’t help get indexed.
    • E-E-A-T: Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness matter for rankings, not for the index.
    • Topical Authority & Content Depth: Again, great for ranking, but not a signal for indexing.
    • Hreflang Tags: These help serve the right content to the right region, but don’t affect indexing status.
    • Logical Internal Linking: It supports crawlability but doesn’t guarantee inclusion in the Google index.
    • Readability & H1 Keywords: These improve on-page SEO but won’t help index your website.

How to Check If Google Has Indexed Your Website

To check if Google has indexed a specific URL or page on your site, use the URL Inspection Tool in Google Search Console. It shows whether a page is in the Google index, when it was last crawled, and any issues preventing indexing.

If the page is indexed, you’re good. If not, you can request indexing directly in the tool. But be cautious — spamming the tool won’t help. Focus on technical quality and crawlability first.

New in 2025: Google Trends API

Announced at the same event, the upcoming Google Trends API will allow developers and marketers to get real-time trend data directly via API. Using the API, you’ll be able to analyze seasonal patterns, trending queries, and content performance without manual data exports. This is a big step toward data-driven SEO and smarter content planning.

Best Practices to Get Your Site Indexed

    • Ensure your sitemap is updated and submitted in Search Console.
    • Check your robots.txt file — make sure it doesn't block important pages.
    • Use dofollow links internally to guide the Google crawler.
    • Fix crawl errors in the coverage report.
    • Let Google know about new or updated pages using the URL inspection tool.

Why Google Doesn’t Index Some Pages

Sometimes, Google doesn't index content even if it's live. Reasons may include:

    • Poor content quality or duplicate page issues.
    • Pages using noindex meta tags or blocked in robots.txt.
    • Too many short-lived pages or low-value content.
    • Google from indexing due to policy violations or spam.

If your pages won’t appear in search results, revisit your indexing allowed settings and use Search Console Help for troubleshooting.

Help Google Index Your Content in 2025

The rules of SEO are evolving, but the core remains the same: make it easy for Google to crawl and index your content. Use Search Console, optimize your sitemap, and focus on technical SEO. Avoid myths about ranking signals influencing indexing. If you want to get your website indexed, work with what Google needs — not just what you think it wants.

Want to get a quick overview of your index status? Head over to the Google Search Console’s Coverage Report and start optimizing today.
