Social proof

What is social proof?

Social proof is a psychological concept where people rely on the opinions and behaviors of others when making decisions, especially in uncertain situations. In marketing, it refers to using reviews, ratings, testimonials, and user data to build trust and credibility with potential customers.

In the context of local SEO, social proof is a powerful factor - Google reviews, star ratings, and the number of public testimonials heavily influence local consumer decisions and search engine visibility.

What should you know about social proof?

The principle is simple: "If others recommend it, it must be good." Businesses can leverage this effect in many ways:

  • showcasing customer reviews and ratings on websites, Google profiles, and social media,
  • highlighting testimonials or quotes from satisfied clients,
  • displaying trust signals like client numbers, positive ratings, awards, or certifications,
  • encouraging happy customers to share their opinions online,
  • using local SEO tool like Rating Captain to collect and display reviews via widgets, badges, or rankings.

The importance of social proof in local SEO

For local businesses, social proof is not just persuasive - it’s also an SEO signal. User-generated content in the form of reviews impacts how Google ranks and displays local results. Effective use of social proof helps to:

  • increase click-through rates (CTR) in local search,
  • improve visibility in Google Maps through frequent, high-quality reviews,
  • boost conversions (calls, visits, reservations) from local listings,
  • influence consumer choices in micro-moments - the exact moments people search, compare, and decide.

Examples of social proof

  • A hotel features quotes from Google Reviews and a "Top 10 in the city" badge on its website.
  • A medical clinic displays a 5-star rating and number of satisfied patients on its landing page.
  • A restaurant embeds a widget with Facebook and TripAdvisor reviews for social validation.
