I truly have no idea how CrossFit Union Square has this many positive reviews. At CFUS everyone there is a too cool for anyone type of gym with a drink the kool-aid atmosphere and community. People only care about themselves including a few of the coaches (not Daniel or Patrick). If you're in the cool kids group, you're welcomed. If not, enjoy being barely taught, legitimately laughed at, and literally ridiculed for any mistakes in form or how the gym works. I was actually asked after trying to learn about a hero workout "if I actually believed I was even close to that level to complete let alone finish" in a laughed and scoffing way. Another time after signing up for my first ever CrossFit Open, halfway through the workout for time, I was told all my reps wouldn't be counted as I was doing my toestobar from the wrong side of the bar (never had been done that way once in workouts at the gym). All together, this gym and the coaches besides the few ones mentioned before, single-handedly ruined the entire sport for me completely. I left every single day feeling MUCH WORSE after an hour grueling workout with only negativity. I could not possibly imagine ever recommending this place nor wish anyone to be a part of CFUS again.
I joined CFUS earlier this year and I'm so glad I did. This gym features: - a high quality staff that's invested in your growth - a competitive, yet supportive and inclusive community of members - various cute dogs I'm looking forward to growing my CrossFit skillset with this community.
I dont often write negative reviews, but I dont know how this place has all five stars. I dropped in after confirming 24 hours in advance, and receiving confirmation from someone at the gym. The drop in fee is not anywhere, and though its five dollars lower than other places in the area, it would be nice to know what theyre asking for on the landing page. The place had about 40% too many people for the class, and the space was quite hectic. Coaches were telling people to be careful with the weights, but people didnt seem to mind. Form overall made me very nervous, and the theater in the round style basement setup made it impossible for the coaches to see more than a quarter of the class at once. There was no introduction, very little warm up, then straight to olly lifting. Then a rush to do a met con with chest to bar where I wouldve hit my head on piping every time had I tried to actually do explosive kipping. Then no cool down despite there being more than 7 minutes left in the hour. A coach noticed me about 20 minutes into the class and asked if I was new, had a warm hello when I mentioned I was dropping in, but that was it. I suppose if you want somewhere to be going through the motions surrounded by other people going through the motions, this might be your place.
