I honestly don't know how to rate this one... we paid WAYYYY too much money for NOTHING!!! Not a lot of animals were out. A bunch of places were under construction. Not much going on at the Arongatan center.. we just weren't impressed at all... we had even given it a 2nd chance. Last year we went and it was a bad experience then as well. We will just go back to the Louisville zoo! Wayyyy better there!
Save your money! My family from out of town was visiting so we thought it'd be fun to go to the zoo and have lunch while there, nope! They fail to tell you before charging you FULL PRICE for tickets that ALL the cafes close 3 hours early BEFORE the zoo closes, and there's NOWHERE to get drinks or snacks after that! All the vending machines are empty too! The zoo was never great but I've never seen it this bad. Many exhibits were closed or under construction. I left a message with the guest services manager but no one cares about that either. Save your money or go to one of the many water parks, you're welcome. Wish someone had told me about this mess before we spent over $200!
Not as grand as I thought it would be for the price of parking and tickets. $63.50 for two adults and parking and that's with a military discount bought online (cost more in-person). I travel a lot and make an effort to visit all zoos wherever I go and this one was a bit disappointing. I don't like bashing on zoos as a lot of them work towards conservation efforts (I guess that's where my money went, probably). But this one didn't have much to offer. My hometown zoo, the Topeka Zoo (KS), offers more animal attractions than Indy for a far cheaper price. You grab a zoo map and by looking at it think the zoo is going to be huge, but really it take ~20 minutes tops to walk the whole perimeter. There are only three buildings you can enter: desert dome, dolphins, and aquarium. Outdoor animals are your typical zoo attractions: elephants, monkeys, lions/tigers, rhinos - didn't even see a hippo enclosure which I thought was different. If you look up you can observe the staff on scissor lifts train the macaws to fly from one edge of the zoo to the other, which is cool. The zoo also has two walk-in enclosures where you can pay to feed small birds nector. And with the aquarium you can touch the sharks and rays. The zoo's okay in my opinion but I won't be going back.
