5-star (in 2013) 2.5-star in 2016. I moved in nearly four years ago because this was a high-end apartment complex that was close to work and in the middle of the up and coming South End. This building has gone through several management company changes and isnt what it once was. While the area appears to be vibrant, its also seen its fair share of increases in crime and this building has been a hot spot for thieves. Pros: close to Charlotte, Interstate 77, light rail, building is steel and concrete, the weekday concierge Liz, and Porter, a local driver, are two of the nicest people youll ever meet, nice rooftop views of Charlotte Cons: crime, aging building and amenities, annual rent increases, garage exits constantly broken, crowded bike storage, cigarette smoking is allowed in units, building fire alarms continue to be triggered by an ongoing mechanical issue in the elevators, management company Hawkins side: Pretty sunsets if youre up high. A local brewery on Hawkins is VERY loud. They play live music nearly every night (you wont experience this on your tour) If you want a place to relax after a long day at work (particularly Thursday-Saturday), this isnt the apartment building for you. Go to YouTube and search Ashton South End / Hawkins Street / Brewery Noise to hear first hand. You will hear loud cover music / DJ until 10pm most nights; later in the summer, and all day Sunday afternoon. Courtyard side: Nice city view but is really loud, especially when firetrucks roar down Tremont on their way to 77, which is frequently. Youll hear people who had a long night in the early hours of the morning shouting as well. If youre a sound sleeper or a night owl, this is probably the side you want. South Boulevard side: Nice morning light on this side. Youll be dealing with the light rail noise and the rail crossing at Camden and Tremont which is every 15 minutes. It seems to disappear during the day with the competition from ambient noise, however, you will hear it at night. It doesn't bother everyone though, so shouldn't necessarily be a deal breaker. Rooftop: Amazing view of the City! Packed with partiers in the summer. Kind of like MTV Spring Break for those of you that remember that. For those that are sensitive to cigarette smoke, stay indoors. Not the pool for you if youre looking to swim laps, or enjoy a nice quiet weekend afternoon reading a book, etc. It can be really nice during a summer weekday when everyone is at work and gets nice breezes even on the hottest Charlotte Summer afternoons. Other/Garage: the gate on the Hawkins street entrance has been broken about 30% of this year (2016), meaning you can only exit the building one way. Incredibly inconvenient, and also a fire hazard. There have been several car break-ins throughout this year and CMPD actually arrested three people (thankfully!) in December. This is ongoing issue. Guest parking is non-existent during the weekends. If you drive a large SUV, the garage is pretty tight. Personal Experience: After living here four years, Im now paying several hundred dollars more per month than in 2013. I decided to not renew my lease. I gave the Ashton 39 days-notice, but they demand 60 and are charging me a $2100 penalty. Disclosure: they had the right to do this. They will not be flexible or work with you (even if you lived here for four years), so be prepared for that. Also, if youre planning on staying here temporarily and building a house, etc., please make sure you read the lease breakage penalties. They can be substantial, i.e., several months rent. There is a lot of competition in the area and a lot to choose from. If you want the same feel of Ashton, but newer amenities, fresh carpet, shiny new cabinets and floors, and gleaming appliances, check out any of the dozens of new apartment complexes in the South End, Dilworth or Midtown. Avoid living near any of the popular new watering holes if you want any peace and quiet and always lock your car. Good luck in your search.

The ashton south end displayed an enormous lack of professionalism. Over the course of the application process they changed their reasoning multiple times. For example, the offer letter submitted needs to be signed. That I can understand even though many documents these days are electronically signed. So I got it signed. However, now it was too short and I quote "the offer letter has to be 5-10 pages long". Now that seemed weird to me since I worked at the biggest western bank and they offered me a job over the phone (I asked after and their offer letters are 2 pages long). I also asked a couple of friends who work at McKinsey among others, none of which had more than 2 pages. Which made me think, maybe they are just making up reasons, so I tried to talk to the property manager. The leasing agent told me the manager will call me. Days went by and only after I wrote a Google review, I received a call. What surprise, the reason the offer letter wasn't good enough had changed again. Now they were saying it seemed fraudulent. I mean ok it is my father who wrote it but one google search would have revealed that it is a real company with millions in assets. All in all the communication within the leasing team seems to poorly and the way you are treated there is frightening. The apartment itself was nice though.
