In March of 2020, my husband and I fell in love with the grounds at ThorpeWood. We were planning our November 2020 wedding and put our deposit in the day we visited. The tour touted a more than just a venue slogan where a wedding coordinator was provided and multiple ceremony/rehearsal sites. In September, the Governor released that venues were allowed to operate at 75%. I was contacted via email, advising that we could increase our guest count from 75 people to 110 people. It was also advised that the staff and vendors were required to wear masks but that it was optional for our guests. In October, the above was confirmed once again with a new point of contact, our coordinator. We were informed of our 8 hour rental time having to start 2 hours before the ceremony. The timeline was extremely tight for the actual wedding, leaving us 6 hours. The bridal party was only allowed to get dressed at the venue, which we knew upon booking. The mandatory early arrival was never conveyed. We asked to compromise and be there an hour early and put the other hour on the back end. We were told that if we wanted extra time, we could purchase that time for $500 an hour. We were provided an online program to assist in planning if we wished, but it wasnt required. Everything following this meeting seemed very cookie cutter and one way, ThorpeWoods way. November 9, I received an email asking about a guest list spreadsheet on the online program. We chose to not use that feature as it was an optional program. Although I provided the table/guest list, I was advised by the coordinator, I don't have time to put them on social tables, since you did not provide a spreadsheet, it is more manual labor than I have time for. But please do provide all names, address and phone numbers to each of these guests. At this point the only service that was provided by the day of coordinator was at the meeting a month prior, where a pre-existing timeline template was edited with our information. November 10, Governor Hogan releases an ADVISORY for MD residents to not hold or attend gatherings more than 25 people, but that Maryland was not going backwards in phases. Nothing new added for the mask mandate that wasnt in place 30 days prior when we were advised that mask wearing was up to the individual minus the vendors/staff of ThorpeWood. The same day (2 days before our wedding day) I received an email advising that everyone had to wear masks unless they were outside, 6 ft apart, or eating/drinking. I responded advising that I would hope what had been agreed upon, in writing, just 30 days prior, would be honored as the governor did not issue anything different in reference to masks. I could easily cut your numbers to 50% or to 25 people. You must understand this was the response I received. Two more emails would be exchanged and a request for a phone call from the day of coordinator which we never received on November 11. We only received a response via email with another invoice for added items to be paid for at the rehearsal. November 12, at 730am, the day before our wedding, Julie sent, yet another pointed email demanding our compliance, again, that she could enforce any rule she wishes as it was HER business, but that if we did not comply with wearing of masks and providing all information of every guest, they would not hold our wedding and we could get a full refund. She closed with the choice is yours, its really not that difficult. Following our request for a refund Julie made multiple social media posts including a post urging others to contact her if they were interested in the fallout; a wedding full of first responders disregard for keeping everyone safe; reaching for attention. The individuals running this venue are nothing short of unprofessional and conniving. The grounds are far more beautiful than the character of the individuals we dealt with. There was an agreement, in writing, regardless of anyones personal beliefs, that agreement was made under the same restrictions.
