I spent nearly 11 weeks with AV on the beautiful southern coast of Kenya. What an experience it was. I highly recommend AV. If you're looking for full cultural immersion on your gap year, here is your answer. Within the first fortnight, we had already attended weddings, supported the local football team, gone to the local market, got rustic (!) haircuts and started teaching at our placement schools. It was the first time that I had been away from home for an extended period of time, as well as living with a group of individuals my age. This brought many challenges as well as rewards and is all part of the experience. I formed relationships that I will treasure for a long time, both with my housemates as well as our hosts. I also witnessed that there is a direct correlation between the effort you put in and the amount you get out. I was committed to the school and wanted to make a difference, which was obviously immensely appreciated by our hosts. Getting to know the kids and teachers takes time but is so rewarding. I had to leave early on account of increasing Covid-19 restrictions but I will be back!
I spent 3 months or so living with the family of an indigenous peoples called the Lepchas in North-East India. This was an incredible experience and one I remember fondly. The host family I stayed with were so kind, welcoming and generous. I taught the children of the village English, which was a good challenge and very enjoyable - the children were so keen to learn and really appreciate what you can offer them. The scenery here is spectacular and very rural - the nearest market is an hour walk over the hills. Perfect for anyone looking for something completely different and away from the usual comforts of home! Africa and Asia Venture offer a very special opportunity to live and work in a unique place and become part of an indigenous community. You can give plenty back while taking away a lot yourself from this experience!
I absolutely loved my time with AV on the teaching programme in Tanzania in 2010. AV were really helpful beforehand with lots of fundraising ideas and information before I left for Tanzania and they answered all the questions my parents had too. Our group was split between 4 schools around Arusha and Moshi. I lived with 3 other girls in a house in our school grounds, we had very sporadic water and no electricity but we quickly grew to love our new home. All the teachers at the school were really interested in us and the kids loved us, we taught classes of roughly 100 kids in pairs, which was mayhem to begin with but the kids loved it and by the end of the program we could really see their English improving. We also introduced a sports afternoon every week which they really loved as they didn't have the equipment for any activities usually. The AV rep was always available over the phone if we ever needed her for any advice, she also visited us at the school to see how we were settling in and we always felt really safe there as everyone in the village knew us. All of our group met up every weekend to do other activities round either of our towns. Our free travel was amazing, we chose to climb Kilimanjaro and go to Zanzibar during half term, we used Kilimanjaro to raise money for our school and had loads of new tables made (the old ones sometimes collapsed mid lesson with 5 kids perched on them!) and painted several classrooms to brighten things up. After our teaching placement finished we all went to Uganda for white water rafting and then we went onto Kenya to travel and AV had organised the Masai Mara safari at the end of the time for us which was amazing. I would really recommend AV, everything felt so organised and we always had help or advice whenever we needed it. The whole experience was incredible. You will also make friends for life on this kind of placement, 3 of our school group still sponsor a little girl who was 3 years old at the time of our placement, a granddaughter of one of the teachers. We sponsor her to go to a private English speaking school so we still have close links with everyone at Ilkidinga and regular updates about life there.
The volunteering trip to Kenya was absolutely incredible. Made amazing friends and only wish I could've stayed longer. Highly recommend for people that enjoy working with children and want to do something out of their comfort zone. Also on the coast which doesn't hurt so there's plenty of time to relax and have fun on the weekends as well.
I absolutely loved my time doing AV. I met great people from all corners of the globe and had once in a life time experiences. A great way to spend a holiday and I highly reccomend AV to anyone and everyone interested in volunteering.
