Google has officially confirmed what many in the search marketing industry suspected: AI Mode data is now included in Search Console reports. This marks a significant shift for SEOs, content creators, and anyone analyzing organic search traffic. From now on, clicks, impressions, and positions generated through AI Overviews and AI Mode will count toward your totals in the Search Console Performance report—without being labeled as a separate traffic source.

What Is AI Mode and How Is It Different?

AI Mode builds on the capabilities of AI Overviews to deliver a more interactive and intelligent search experience. Rather than displaying traditional search results, Google AI Mode breaks a user’s query into subtopics using a technique called query fan-out. It then conducts simultaneous searches for each subtopic, generating an ai-powered response with links to support and expand the answer.

This layered, conversational approach means users are encouraged to dive deeper, ask follow-up questions, and explore related topics within the same interface. It’s not just a search; it’s a guided research experience powered by a custom version of Gemini.

AI Mode Traffic Now Appears in Search Console

In June 2025, Google updated its Search Console documentation to reflect the inclusion of AI Mode data in performance metrics. According to the update, when a user clicks a link within AI Mode—whether from a carousel, text snippet, or image block—it now counts as a click in Search Console. Likewise, impressions and positions are calculated based on the same standards used in traditional search results.

    • Click: A user clicking a link within AI Mode triggers a standard click metric.
    • Impression: Follows the same logic as standard search—if your result is potentially visible, it counts.
    • Position: Calculated according to where the element appears within the search results page, including image blocks and carousels.

Importantly, when users ask follow-up questions inside AI Mode, Google treats each as a new query. That means all the associated metrics—clicks, impressions, and positions—are tied to that new interaction.

Why This Matters for SEO Strategy

This change complicates how SEOs interpret performance data. Since AI Mode clicks are merged with regular Google Search traffic, it’s no longer clear whether a user engaged with a traditional search result or an AI-generated response. If you’ve noticed unusual increases in traffic or click-through rates without corresponding ranking shifts, the cause may well be AI Mode traffic.

That said, Google has emphasized that SEO best practices remain unchanged. There's no need to create new markup, machine-readable files, or structured data specifically for AI Mode. Standard optimization strategies—clear answers, topical depth, and semantic clarity—still apply.

How AI Mode Changes the Search Journey

Rather than presenting a single list of links, Google Search in AI Mode behaves more like a research assistant. It encourages longer sessions, multiple questions, and deeper dives into content. This creates more opportunities for exposure—but also introduces ambiguity into traffic attribution.

It’s no longer just about ranking on page one. Your content now needs to be structured in a way that allows Google’s AI to identify, understand, and surface it across multiple branches of a user’s search flow.

How Google AI Mode Generates Search Console Data

The logic behind data from AI Mode is rooted in Google’s concept of a query fan-out. By breaking a single search into many sub-queries, Google can return more targeted search features—like carousels, source links, and expanded summaries. When your content appears in these AI-generated structures, it registers in your Search Console reports the same way as it would through traditional rankings.

This reinforces the need for SEO professionals to monitor metrics at a higher resolution. Watch for spikes in search traffic that don’t match expected rankings. These could be driven by visibility in AI features, not standard blue links.

Optimizing for AI Mode Without Overhauling Your Site

Google has stated clearly: no additional technical implementation is required to appear in AI Mode. However, you can increase your chances of inclusion by creating high-quality content that aligns with how AI Mode uses subtopics and related context. Here’s how:

    • Write answers that are clear, structured, and focused on solving specific user questions.
    • Include supporting resources, links, and references that AI can cite within overviews.
    • Use natural, conversational language that matches how users search and speak.
    • Make your pages easy to scan and segment into subtopics Google can identify.

AI Mode and the Future of Google Search Console Reports

AI Mode is a new layer in the evolving landscape of Google Search. It introduces nuance, personalization, and real-time exploration into how people engage with content. For SEOs, it’s both a challenge and an opportunity. AI Mode traffic is real, measurable, and growing. Understanding it will be essential for maintaining visibility and refining your strategy in 2025 and beyond.
