Google has officially confirmed that the August 2025 spam update is finished rolling. The rollout is done as of September 22, after running for just under 27 days. According to the Google Search Status Dashboard, this was the first spam update of 2025, following three separate spam updates released in 2024.

What happened during this spam update?

The spam update started on August 26, 2025, and quickly made its presence known. Many websites saw changes within the first 24 hours, suggesting that Google’s automated systems to detect search spam hit the web fast. Then, around September 9, more volatility was reported, with site owners noticing organic traffic disappearing, search indexing problems, and sharp ranking drops.

At the same time, some publishers previously hit by earlier spam updates experienced unexpected recoveries. That’s a reminder that sites that see a change after a spam update should review our spam policies to ensure compliance, since sites that violate our policies may rank lower in results or not appear in results at all.

    SpamBrain and AI-based spam-prevention

Google again highlighted SpamBrain, its AI-based spam-prevention system, which is designed to make it better at spotting spam and to help ensure it catches new types of spam. From time to time, Google improves this system to adapt to emerging spam tactics. In Google’s own words:

    • SpamBrain is our AI-based spam-prevention system
    • The goal is to improve that system to make spam detection more efficient
    • Updates help ensure it catches new types of spam in the evolving web ecosystem

Why this matters for SEO and search marketing

For the SEO and search marketing community, every spam update brings risk and opportunity. Sites depending on spammy tactics saw major setbacks, while websites aligned with Google’s quality guidelines often enjoyed boosts in search ranking.

This kind of algorithm update reminds site owners that:

    • Spam policies to ensure compliance must be a priority
    • Making changes may help a site improve if our automated systems learn over a period of months that the site complies with our spam policies
    • Making changes might not generate an improvement if the issue was link spam update related, since once the systems remove the effects spammy links may have, the ranking benefit the links may have previously generated for your site is lost permanently

In other words, links may have previously generated benefits, but they cannot be regained once filtered out.

How does this compare to previous spam updates?

The last spam update before this one was the December 2024 spam update, which ran for a week (Dec. 19–26). Earlier 2024 spam updates occurred in March and June, while 2023 saw a big October spam update. Going further back, we had the December 2022 link spam update, which focused specifically on manipulative backlinks.

This pattern shows Google’s automated systems to detect search spam are constantly operating, but the company occasionally pushes major adjustments. These are announced as a normal spam update or link spam update via the post on the Google Search Status Dashboard.

What site owners should do now

If your site was affected by the Google August 2025 spam update, don’t panic. Google itself advises:

    • Update should review our spam policies
    • Ensure your site complies with our spam policies
    • Accept that violations may rank lower or even not appear in results until resolved
    • Understand that changes may help a site improve, but it may take a few weeks or even a period of months for the automated systems to learn that your site is in compliance

Google released the August 2025 spam update with a goal of reinforcing trust in search results. While painful for some, it’s a clear message: follow best practices, avoid spammy shortcuts, and prioritize quality content. As Google’s Liz Reid and others at the company often emphasize, keeping up with Google Search ranking signals isn’t just about surviving the latest update - it’s about long-term alignment.

For anyone hit, this is a chance to course-correct. And for those who saw gains? Proof that building with integrity still pays off in the search engine era of AI search and constant algorithm updates.
